Fire Department

The Township of Union Fire Department provides fire, rescue and EMS services for the Township of Union including Kean University. The Township of Union Fire Department is composed of over 100 career firefighters and civilian employees. The Township of Union Fire Department is composed of 4 shifts under the command of a Battalion Chief and 24 firefighters and officers. They respond with 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, 1 Squad (rescue-pumper) and 1 BLS ambulance. Additional fire apparatus is available for firefighters recalled back-to-duty and a reserve. Specialized apparatus is available for utilization during certain fire and rescue situations.

The Township of Union Fire Department is a full-time, all-career Fire Department that provides 24/7 coverage to 9 square miles of residential, business and industry with over 58,000 night time residents. Union is the home to Kean University and is transverse by Interstate Route 78, the Garden State Parkway, NJ Routes 22 & 82 and NJ Transit passenger and freight lines. The Fire Department holds an ISO rating of Class 2 and responds to approximately 5,500 calls for service annually. It provides fire and inspection services in addition to EMS, confined space rescue, hazardous material and all rescue needs. The Fire Department responds with the Urban Area Security Initiative and Neptune /Foam Task Force, participating heavily in mutual aid responses that have recently included Seaside Park, NJ and the Holland Tunnel.

Township of Union Firefighters are appointed and promoted through the use of the New Jersey Civil Service Commission open, competitive examination system. All Union firefighters are certified as New Jersey State Emergency Medical Technicians.
