[ARCHIVED] MLK Day of Service and Celebration

Mayor Manuel Figueiredo and the Township of Union Committee are partnering with Golden Rule Lodge #24 for a Day of Service and Celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, as well as a celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” speech. The event will take place on Monday, January 16, at 9 a.m. at the Golden Rule Lodge at 221 Oswald Place in Vauxhall.

“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that the only way to change our community for the better is to work for it, whether it be through acts of service or kindness shown to your neighbors,” said Mayor Manny Figueiredo. “We are so grateful to partner with the Golden Rule Lodge in Vauxhall and spend the day beautifying our neighborhoods.”

Volunteers are asked to check in at 9 a.m. at the Golden Rule Lodge. Union High School volunteers will receive community service hours for this event. Weather permitting, volunteers will assist with the following tasks:

  •  Sorting donated food items and clothing
  • Cleaning garden beds at the Vauxhall Community Garden
  • Cleaning local park (materials will be provided)
  • Senior wellness checks (making phone calls)
  • Food drop-offs at senior residences

If residents cannot attend the event in person, they can still participate by donating and dropping off non-perishable food items or new and gently worn winter clothes at the following locations:

  • Union Town Hall – 1976 Morris Avenue
  • Fire Headquarters – 1 Bond Drive
  • Police Headquarters – 981 Caldwell Avenue
  • Union Public Library – 1060 Stuyvesant Avenue
  • Vauxhall Public Library – 123 Hilton Avenue

Cash and gift cards for the food pantry will also be accepted at Town Hall (Clerk’s Office)
