[ARCHIVED] Route 22 eastbound lane closure this weekend Nov. 10-12

Route 22 eastbound is scheduled to have a single lane closed this weekend as a bridge replacement project advances in Union Township, Union County. In addition, there will be overnight lane closures on Route 22 and Route 82/Morris Avenue next week.

Beginning at 10 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, November 10, until 4 p.m. Sunday, November 12, one lane on Route 22 eastbound is scheduled to be closed between the Bridge over Chestnut Street and the exit to the Garden State Parkway northbound, which will remain open. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained during construction.

The closure is necessary for the installation of precast pavement panels. This is the third of three weekends that will require a single lane closure for the installation of nearly 200 precast panels. Motorists should use caution and slow down through the work zone. Expect delays or consider an alternate route.

Next week, from 10 p.m. until to 6 a.m. the next day beginning Monday, November 13 through Friday, November 17, a single lane on Route 22 is scheduled to be closed between the bridge over Burke Parkway and the driveway to the shopping center with Lowe’s and Burlington Coat Factory. In addition, on Tuesday, November 14, Wednesday, November 15, and Thursday, November 16, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day Route 82/Morris Avenue is scheduled to have a single lane closed in both directions between Floyd Terrace and the traffic signal for the shopping center with Lowe’s and Burlington Coat Factory. The closures are necessary for steel beam installation.

The $40.8 million state-funded project will replace the existing bridges carrying Route 22 eastbound and Route 22 westbound over Route 82, which are in poor condition. The project is located between the Garden State Parkway Exit 140 and Exit 140B and will be coordinated with any work on the Parkway. Additional improvements include widening Route 22 to provide auxiliary lanes, streamlining ramp movements, sidewalk additions, utility upgrades, and new and improved directional signage. An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) with camera installations and a Digital Message Sign also will be installed, and an upgraded storm water drainage system will be constructed along Route 22. The project is anticipated to be complete in summer 2024.
