[ARCHIVED] Important Update: Kean University will affect our property taxes

This your Mayor Cliff People with an important update on our property taxes. First, I would like to thank you for making your voices heard. Because of you, the Kean University Board of Trustees did not move forward on their vote to purchase the 50 acres of land that previously housed Merck, on Morris Ave. They tabled the motion to vote on the land purchase until the courts make their ruling, and that is a direct result of your calls, e-mails and attendance at Monday’s meeting. Unfortunately, University President Dr. Dawood Farahi has stated his intention to move forward with legal proceedings that, if successful, would ensure we lose an additional $5 million in property taxes after we pay to defend our rights. Even as Kean University’s bond rating continues to plummet and school enrollment drastically declines they are continuing to move forward with legal proceedings and denying an existing offer from a developer that would benefit taxpayers, even though they have not stated any alternatives publicly. It is critically important that we continue to make our voices heard to Dr. Farahi’s office and demand that he drop these legal proceedings and work with all of us to move forward to the benefit of Union Township and County taxpayers. Please call Dr. Farahi at 908-737-7000 or e-mail him at dfarahi@kean.edu and continue to make your voice heard. Thank you for your time, and thank you for all of your efforts.
