Municipal, County and State officials were present to celebrate the accomplishments of nine members of the Union Police Department who received awards for their bravery dedication and sacrifice during National Police Week. Township of Union - The Township of Union Celebrated National Police Week yesterday with a commemorative ceremony that included several officers from UPD being recognized for their bravery, dedication and sacrifice.

“The example you set- as officers and as civilians- makes better citizens of all of us and is the glue that binds our community together,” said Manuel Figueiredo when addressing the officers and their families.

The following awards were conferred:
Commendation Medal- Police Officer Marcos Novoa Rios
Commendation Medal- Detective Joseph Foster
Dispatcher of the Year- Aliza Todmann
Command Citation: Police Officer Adam Jovic
Command Citation: Police Officer Chris Lensi
Command Citation: Police Officer Fernando Trejo
Command Citation: Police Officer Carthaniel Crum
Command Citation: Police Officer John Oliviera
Command Citation: Police Officer Robert Leamy

Present at the ceremony were municipal, county and state officials who congratulated the officers and remarked on the significance of celebrating their accomplishments.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week.

Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
