The Mayor and Committee of the Township of Union would like to invite residents to its 1st Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on Wednesday, October 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in front of Town Hall located at 1976 Morris Ave.
“This year we are highlighting Hispanic and Latino Arts and Culture,” said Mayor Manuel Figueiredo. “We are excited to be able to showcase such colorful, fun, and moving performances this year.”
The event will feature a spoken program including a Keynote address by Union County Freeholder Angel G. Estrada, the presentation of the Hispano of the Year Award to Angel Cartagena of Batteries Plus Bulbs, and the recognition of Hispanics Organized for People’s Empowerment (H.O.P.E) a burgeoning hispanic organization in the Township of Union.
The event will also feature music, arts and crafts and face painting, and the following cultural performances:
• Legacy Women- an all-women drum, song and dance troupe that plays the fire-igniting sounds Afro-Caribbean Bomba music
• Salsa Fever On2 Dance Academy- performing a salsa routine, a free 30-minute lesson/Social Salsa
• World Champion Peruvian dancers, Alizon and Lucero Lopez performing Huayno and Danza de la Selva respectively, as well as David Lopez and Aricxy Maldonado who will perform Marinera de la Costa
• Capoeira demonstration by the Brazilian Cultural Center of Newark
From 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. the celebration will feature a visit from the famed Empanada Guy, as well as other local Latin food vendors arriving at 6:00 p.m.
