[ARCHIVED] Union Fire Dept to host Fire Prevention Week Open House on 10/7

The Union Township Fire Department will be hosting their first-ever Fire Prevention Week Open House event on Saturday, October 7, 2017. The fun-filled, educational event will take place from 10:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Union Fire Headquarters located on Bond Dr.

During National Fire Prevention Week, a week dedicated to informing the public on the importance of fire prevention, the Union Fire Department hopes to promote prevention and awareness through fun, innovation and community.

Some of the day’s activities are set to include:

•         A dunk tank

•         An obstacle course for kids

•         Hourly Firehouse tours

•         Seminars on basic first aid and CPR

•         Extrication demos

•         Meet and greet with local firemen

•         Games and more

Complimentary refreshments and hot dogs will also be provided.

President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week on October 4-10, 1925, beginning a tradition of the President of the United States signing a proclamation recognizing the occasion. It is observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began October 8, 1871. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out,” and encourages having a clear and practiced escape plan with two exit strategies in the event of a fire.
