The Mayor and Committee of the Township of Union and the Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) Committee invite residents to celebrate Autism Awareness Month with the Township beginning April 2nd.
“Here in the Township of Union we celebrate this month every year but last year for the first time, the A.D.A. Committee hosted their ‘Jazzed up for Autism’ event” said Suzette Cavadas, Mayor. “This year, we are proud to bring back the ‘Jazzed up’ event on April 23rd as well as a host of other events throughout the month.”
On April 2nd the Township kicks off the month with their “Light it up Blue” campaign for Autism whereby they encourage all residents and businesses to use blue outdoor lightbulbs on this day to show their support for Autism Awareness. They will also be hosting a “Light it Up Blue” photo contest on their Facebook page @TWPUnionNJ.
On April 15, join the A.D.A. Committee and Team Union at the Lincoln Tunnel 5K Challenge as they walk and run to benefit Special Olympics NJ. Additional information and a link to register with Team Union is available at www.uniontownship.com on the Americans with Disabilities Act Committee Page.
The 2nd Annual Jazzed up for Autism Event will take place on April 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at O’Lagar Restaurant on Stuyvesant Ave. Tickets are $30 per person, including a full dinner with a choice of fish, chicken or pork. They can be purchased directly at O’Lagar Restaurant.
Finally, on April 28th the A.D.A. Committee will sponsor the “Dollar towards Autism Event” at the track at Union High School. At this fun event participants can get the chance to enjoy the outdoors while raising money for autism awareness.
“We hope to see our residents at some of these events as we endeavor to go beyond simply promoting awareness to encouraging friends, and collaborators to become partners in the movement towards acceptance and appreciation,” said Michele Delisfort, Committeewoman and member of the A.D.A. Committee.

The Month of April is Autism Awareness Month. Nearly a quarter century ago, the Autism Society launched a nation-wide effort to promote Autism Awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with autism is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
